The Tiverton  area - Knightshayes -Tiverton Canal - other footpaths - Killerton - Diary page -instruction and guided walks in the Tiverton area

Tiverton lies in the midst of the beautiful red rolling hills of mid Devon.  The hills can be very steep and offer beautiful panoramas from their tops.  Nordic walking is well suited to this area as the technique can help you power up to see those beautiful views.  You may nordic walk through your own fields, or along the many footpaths, just watch out for rabbit holes and badger setts in and near the banks, just as you would in ordinary walking.

Organised nordic walking in the Tiverton area

Knightshayes Court

I am extremely grateful to Knightshayes Estate for permission  to run nordic walking courses on the parkland.  The smooth paths through the woodland are ideal for practicing with the poles and for exercising up and down the slopes.  It is fun to explore the fields, and you may find that you are discovering areas of Knightshayes which most people never see.  For our fun social walks, we will offer everyone the option to gather together and relax in the café afterwards to round off the event with a hot chocolate and carrot cake or similar (at your own extra expense).

Please note that the National Trust now charges an entrance fee for use of the Parkland as well as the gardens. This is included in the normal membership subscription, but if you are not a member please go to the gatehouse to pay for the day. When you are a member, please always take your membership card to the entrance to have it recorded, as apparently the recording of member visitors helps with their funding.  There are two lovely shops at Knightshayes, which you may visit without having to pay an entrance fee.  One is next to the plant center and stocks the most alluring plant books, and the other has all those specialist gift items.  There is also a popular café. Please consider showing your appreciation of the National Trust’s generosity towards nordic walkers by visiting the café or shops, and please say that you are a nordic walker when you do so.

I would not of course take you into the formal garden, but I can see no reason why you could not use your poles when on a private visit looking round the gardens.  I recommend that you use the rubber paws on the end of the poles, so there is no danger of damage to the formal lawns and pathways. The paws will also reduce any noise from the pole tips to a minimum.

Tiverton Canal

There are at least 2 circular walks including the Tiverton Canal towpath, and they take you through gorgeous countryside.

I sometimes use these walks or part of them for a more gentle introductory session, and also for the fun nordic walks.   I recommend the use of the rubber paws on the pole tips as the path can be a bit skiddy with the loose gravel.

Footpaths near you

I am always pleased to hear about a circular route in the area.  The best would be smoothish and reasonably wide, so you are not pushing past bracken/grass/brambles all the time.  If you have a favourite walk in your area, please let me know.  You may like to invite others to try it, or to join with you on regular walks to keep you all motivated to exercise.  If you and your family would like to be photographed nordic walking your favourite route, please give me a call and I will be only to pleased to display you on all the internet glory of this website.

Killerton

Killerton is the ideal place to nordic walk because the footpaths are smooth and undulating and you can get a really good bouncy rhythm going. I occasionally come to Killerton and the Silverton area if there is sufficient demand. Again, please always show your National Trust membership card at the entrance so they record you for their finances, and, please note that Killerton does charge for use of the parkland so you need to either stick rigidly to the public footpaths which cross the estate, or pay/produce your card and only go when the Park is open.
